While I used to use the shoe shine method myself years ago, I've found back and forth along the neck using the belt sander sanding blocks works best for me. I think it creates more consistency along the neck.

May 16, 2012 · Be sure to put something under the neck before working. I screw the neck to a jig and then clamp the jig to my workbench. I then use a sanding sponge with various shims underneath at the headstock so it is not going to move. I'll recheck for straightness, then work. I do 25 passes with 320 sandpaper and check for the red marks on the frets.
